Lambuth coach to speak at convocation

Lambuth University will open the fall semester with its annual convocation at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the R. E. Womack Chapel, according to a news release.

This year’s speaker will be Lambuth head football coach Ron Dickerson.

Dickerson said his faith led him to the message titled “A Reason to Keep on Going.” He found inspiration in the verse Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

“It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete, student or member of the community,” Dickerson explained in the release. “My message is simple: to never, ever give up, no matter how dismal the situation may seem.”

Lambuth President Bill Seymour said Dickerson is the perfect choice to speak.

“As I considered who might serve as our convocation speaker, I realized we had perhaps the best prospect right here on our own campus,” Seymour said in the release. “Ron Dickerson is one of those special individuals who can inspire others. He is a wonderful speaker and a great representative for Lambuth University. I am looking forward to hearing his message.”

Offensive Player of the Week
WR Rodrick Jefferson, SR
5 receptions, 87 yards, 2 TDs

The Predator picked up where he left off last season with two TD grabs this week. Jefferson is simply outstanding, and has proven that he is an elite WR and is capable of producing two TDs per game throughout the course of the season. Expect big things from this big receiver.

Defensive Player of the Week
LB Jaime Payton, JR
11 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 1 pass breakup

JP also returned to form vs Arkansas Tech by leading the team in tackles. The top tackler from 2009 registered 11 stops on the evening and was all over the field. Payton established himself as one of the best linebackers in the NAIA last season, and he is on his way to making a name for himself in the NCAA.

Hard to complain that we're mentioned in an article on ESPN, even if we are called a "cupcake". I'm sure we'll get more press when Georgia State plays Alabama. FWIW, I think we've got a great chance for Ws in all of our games. We'll definitely be underdogs in some of our games which can be expected and isn't unreasonable. After all, it's a higher level of competition. I think it's more fun to be the underdog, anyhow.

One thing is for sure: We don't play in the MSC anymore.

The Jackson Sun
• August 26, 2010

Today at a faculty and staff meeting, Lambuth University President Bill Seymour announced that planning focused on securing the future of the university has been solidified, according to a news release.

Seymour discussed commitments that have been received to provide necessary funding in three areas, the release says. First are funds that will help the school address its most immediate financial needs, including employee salaries. Lambuth spokeswoman Mickey Goodwin said the first installment of overdue payroll will be made available to employees on Friday and university officials will work as quickly as possible to catch employees up on payroll.

Second, the release says, "a commitment has been obtained for funding that will enable Lambuth to be financially sustainable throughout this academic year."

Third, "a major commitment has been received that will lead to long-term stability and growth," the release says. "This commitment relates in large measure to the creation of a joint venture that will develop and grow online education opportunities."

Goodwin said the university will not release any details of the financial arrangements or identify the investors involved. "We want to keep our focus on the students," she said.

She said the investment partners have changed since a pending investment deal was announced earlier this year.

"We could not have asked for a better plan in place," Goodwin said. "Lambuth is here, and we're going to be around for a long time."

University Treasurer Joey Stoner, who has been a chief negotiator in the development of these plans, also addressed the faculty and staff, the release says. He told them: “Our employees and students have always been our top priority throughout this process. We could not have arrived at this point without your sacrifices.”

Seymour and Dean of Students Sam Mauck have scheduled a meeting of student leaders for this afternoon, to begin a process of discussion with students, the release says. They will work to develop opportunities for additional student information meetings in the near future.
